Bella, Queen of the World

I have two rescue cats, Otto and Bella who, in spite of being from the same litter, look absolutely nothing alike. Otto is a deep dark gray with a powerful build and a serene temper. He truly seems to believe that he’s a dog, always lying on the rug just inside the front door, wagging his tail and waiting for us to come home. Bella, on the other hand, is black and white, very dainty and has all of her cat instincts in tact. She pounces, hisses and can leap at least five feet straight into the air when startled. I adore them both but I would have to admit Bella and I have a very special relationship. She believes she is the Queen of the whole world and I am her indentured servant who exists only to brush her.

In my home, which is a 1940’s California ranch house, there is a very feminine dressing room. Along one whole wall is a built-in pink marble dressing table
with a frilly little boudoir chair and a large wall mirror. Bella believes that the dressing room and particularly the frilly boudoir chair is hers. I have to keep the door to the room shut or she would be in there 24/7 sitting on the chair staring at herself in the mirror. She really seems to be admiring herself like some Hollywood star of a by gone time. What she is waiting for is me to brush her and brush her I do. I have learned my lesson because if I don’t brush her I will pay for it later. She has the uncanny ability to know when I am completely relaxed and to choose that moment to sink her teeth into my hand. I have found it much easier to brush her ten times a day than to wear a bunch of little band-aids to cover my puncture wounds.
